Jesus Alfredo Matta, 69, passed away unexpectedly on April 28, 2023, at his residence in Balmorhea, Texas.
Jesus or Chuy, as he was known by most, was born in Alpine, Texas on September 17, 1953, to Alfredo and Leonila (Lila) Matta. He attended school in Balmorhea and graduated in 1972. After graduation, he enrolled in American Business College in Odessa, Texas graduating with an Associate’s Degree. After working at the Anthony’s store in Monahans, Texas and at the J.C. Penney store in Pecos, Texas for several years, he worked briefly for the U. S. Postal Service in Pecos, Texas. Soon thereafter, he began employment at the Texas Department of Transportation (TXDOT) location in Balmorhea, Texas where he worked as the Office Manager for 31 years. This job proved to be the most fulfilling job of his life. He became an indispensable and essential employee for TXDOT. He retired in February 2022. In 1999, Chuy was elected to the Balmorhea Independent School District Board of Trustees. He served for 23 years---11 as President. He was dedicated to his service missing only 1 meeting during the entire time he served. At the time of his passing, Chuy was seeking re-election to another 3-year term hoping to continue to help usher in an exciting new era for Balmorhea ISD with the opening of the new K-12 Campus. He was excited to be a part of this new chapter in the history of Balmorhea ISD. His support for the construction of the new campus will never be forgotten and will always be appreciated.
Chuy was smart, humble, kind, gentle, patient, generous, funny, and hard-working. The measure of a man is not status or wealth or the accumulation of things. It is the respect that one has from people. Chuy was well-respected by all who knew him.
