David Smith

Barstow, Texas

David Alan Smith (90) of Pecos, TX, passed away on January 27, 2020 in Pecos.  On Saturday, February 1st, 2020, his life will be celebrated at First Christian Church, located at 5th and Elm in Pecos.  Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m., funeral services at 2:00 p.m., and burial at Mt. Evergreen. Jim Goodwin, Pastor of First United Methodist Church of Pecos, TX will officiate. Arrangements are made by Pecos Funeral Home.

David was born in Pecos, TX to Hollis Stobaugh and Mollie Olean Smith on March 28, 1929 and attended schools in both Pecos and El Paso, TX.  He and Lea Nita (Card) Smith were married on August 13, 1949 in Pecos, TX, and he was self-employed as an independent contractor laying carpeting and linoleum as he raised his family.  He also spent one weekend a month serving our country in the Army National Guard, retiring with the rank of Colonel. His thirteen years in the Pecos Little League program coaching the “Dodgers” brought Pecos many honors and titles.

David is preceded in death by his parents (Hollis and Olean Smith) and Betty Lue (Hill) Smith, whom he married in September 1981.

David is survived by his four children: Vicki Lynn Williams; Debra Ann Myers and husband, Gary; Libby Smith; and Davy and wife Marilyn Smith. He was blessed with eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Survivors also include Bill Smith (brother to David) and wife Audra, as well as Bill’s children and grandchild. David is also blessed with many surviving cousins, nieces, and nephews that spread across his beloved country. His last love, Cristina Sonnen of Pecos, TX, brought him great peace and comfort in the last years of his life.

Pallbearers are Doak Painter, Keat Vernon, Leroy Michaelis, Michael Michaelis, Timothy Michaelis, and Martin Arreguy, who served under David’s command.

Memorial can be made to Pecos Methodist Church Building Fund in care of Jay Spence, 2026 Wyoming, Pecos, TX 79772.

The family of David Smith wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the Methodist congregation for being part of his beloved extended family, the family of Cristina Sonnen who enfolded him in their arms with friendship, and the congregation of First Christian Church who shared their church as a meeting place as we worshipped our God.
