Willie James Kates Sr., lovingly known as “Red,” was born on August 1, 1929, in Tom, Oklahoma, to James Rainey Kates and Dolly Powell. He lived a life marked by hard work, devotion to family, and a talent for fixing and building just about anything with his hands.

Willie proudly served his country in the United States Air Force, joining on December 11, 1952, and attaining the rank of Airman First Class. During his time on active duty, he met the love of his life, Charlene Taylor. They were united in marriage on December 21, 1953. Their love and commitment became the foundation of a family legacy that continues today.

A mechanic by trade both during and after his military service, Willie was known for his strong work ethic and his gift for repairing cars, improving his home, and building whatever was needed. He found joy in the simple but meaningful things in life: fishing, gardening, growing fresh vegetables, riding bicycles around town and with his grandchildren, and spending treasured time with family and friends. He was a man who stayed busy, cared deeply for those he loved, and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Willie was preceded in death by his father, James Rainey Kates; his mother, Dolly Powell; many brothers and sisters; his daughter, Rachel Sheridan, and her husband, William Sheridan; his daughter, Barbara Kates; and his great-granddaughter, Alexis Venegas.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his son, Willie James Kates Jr.; his daughter-in-law, Darlene Kates; his granddaughter, Amanda Kates, and her husband, Daniel Montano, along with their children, Caden Montano, Ellie Montano, and Kensley Montano; his granddaughter, Barbara Venegas, and her husband, Angel Venegas, along with their sons, Jordan Venegas and Jacob Venegas; his granddaughters, Attie Montgomery and Sarah Meek; and his grandson, Jadon Montgomery.

Willie will be remembered for his strength, his craftsmanship, his love for the outdoors, and, most of all, his love for his family. His life was one of service, dedication, and generosity. His memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him dearly.
