Haskell Stephen Holmes died Dec 12,2025) in Mineola, Tx, after a long struggle with cancer. He was born Jan 24, 1946 to Haskell “Hack” and Louise Holmes in Littlefield, TX. He joined sisters Martha (Parton), who survives him and Pat (Brown) who pre deceased him. When he was 3 months old the family relocated to Pecos, TX where Hack owned and operated Holmes Oil Company.
Steve attended schools in Pecos, graduating in 1964. He was a standout athlete in high school, lettering in football, track and basketball. He made All Distract Honorable Mention in football his senior year, All District in track, competing in broad jump and 440 yard relay. Steve was active in other school activities and was elected by his classmates as Class Favorite his sophomore year. Following graduation Steve attended Texas Tech University, then joined the US Air Force, stationed at Lackland and Reece AFBs. He lived many years in Pecos until he moved to Mineola. He operated Holmes Oil Company after his dad’s death and was involved in other business ventures in Pecos and Dallas. He had many lifelong friends in and around the Pecos area. In addition to his sister Martha, Steve is survived by his son Haskell Stephen Holmes II of Midland, several nieces and nephews, Peggy Beaton, his faithful caregiver, as well as many lifelong friends from Pecos, to include Johnny Kirby and Coy Clark.
Graveside Services will be held on Friday, December 23, 2026 at 2:00 at Mount Evergreen Cemetery.
Remembrances may be sent to a charity of your choice, or Pecos High School Athletic Dept. Service will be conducted by Dr Truman Turk of Abilene, a classmate and teammate of Steve’s.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, beside his parents.
