Ricky was born in Pecos, TX to Alberto and Alicia Barreno on November 25, 1962. He was a Pecos High School Alumni. He married Angie on December 31, 1982 in Pecos, TX. He graduated from Lubbock Christian University with his bachelor's degree in Business Management in 2009. He worked for Texas New Mexico Power Company for 34 years. He retired and then worked for PBTISD for 2 years as a welding instructor. He then finished his career working for Champion X for 4 years.
Ricky lived his life as a devoted husband, father, steadfast provider, and a man of unwavering faith and resilience. As a resilient provider and the youngest of six siblings, he poured everything he had into his family; he loved with every ounce of his heart, leaving behind a legacy anchored in devotion. He married the love of his life, he was noted to have said “it was love at first sight.” For 43 years, he shared his life with his wife, Angie. Together they built a life grounded in love, faith, hard work, perseverance, and family. Through life’s joys and its most difficult seasons, they stood beside one another.
To his children, he was a Dad long before he became Papi. He was a source of strength, guidance, laughter and love, yet stern in the early years. To his grandchildren, he was simply Papi, a name that came to represent love and presence. “No,” was never an answer to them, it was not in his vocabulary. His family was his world. He was the fiercest supporter of his children and grandchildren, and nothing brought him greater joy than bringing everyone together for family gatherings, camping trips, and memorable vacations. He also enjoyed golf with his boys and the annual baseball tournament.
A fan of Texas sports, he cheered passionately for the Texas Rangers and his beloved Dallas Cowboys (especially when they were winning). He also cheered on the Boston Red Sox. He faithfully coached basketball and little league baseball many years ago. He especially loved coaching his grandchildren.
His passion for life was always accompanied by a soundtrack; he had a massive love for music, never turned down a chance for karaoke, and was a lifelong fan of Jay Perez. He was a lead singer for several bands. His best friend Ben, of over 50 years, also shared that same love for music. Ricky would say Ben was “his brother from another mother.” Music brought him joy, and that joy became part of the memories he created with many.
He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered. There is comfort in knowing he is no longer in pain or suffering. May his eternal resting place be glorious in the presence of the Lord.
Ricky is preceded in death by his parents, Alberto and Alicia Barreno, brothers, Robert and Ruben Barreno.
Ricky is survived by his wife, Angie Barreno, his children: Yvette (Eric) Abila, Ricardo (Karlene) Barreno, and Adrian (De’dra) Barreno; his sisters: Rachel Rodriguez and Rebecca Vasquez; Brother Raul Barreno; 14 grandchildren: Isaiah, Juliana, Jayden, Aubrie, Alannah, Lauren, Nikolas, Avian, Bibiana, Noelia, Julian, Ariz, Legend, Kailani; 4 great-grandchildren: Ryan, Catalina, Ian, and Rylee, and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
